Job Application Autofill: How It Works & What to Check

Learn how job application autofill works on Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby, which answers need your review, and how to check your resume before submitting.

What is job application autofill?

Job application autofill reuses saved information to populate fields on an employer’s application form. Instead of retyping your name, contact details, or work history for each role, you keep a profile and review the fields filled from it.

A job application tool can also help prepare the documents and role-specific answers that a general browser autofill profile does not contain. Those drafts still need your review. Autofill prepares fields; you decide when the application is ready to submit.

Where Jobsy can help

  • Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby: Jobsy detects supported application forms when its Chrome side panel is open.
  • Other company forms: Choose “Map this page” and allow access to that site. Coverage varies, and some fields need manual entry. Workday support is limited.
  • LinkedIn, Indeed, and Wellfound: Capture a posting and download a tailored resume. Jobsy does not automate these platforms’ own application boxes.

Autofill requires Chrome on a desktop or laptop. On mobile, use the web workspace for resume import, tailoring, and downloads. See the current compatibility guidance before choosing your workflow.

Set up your profile before filling a form

  1. Import your resume and review the extracted experience and contact details.
  2. Add and pin the Jobsy Chrome extension, then sign in with the same account as the web app.
  3. Review the extension’s data-use disclosure before opening it on an application page.
  4. Read the role and prepare a tailored resume from the relevant experience in your profile.
  5. Use the side panel to fill supported fields, then complete anything marked “Needs you”.

A current profile matters. If your email address or work history changes, update it before reusing it across applications. After filling, inspect the actual form on the employer’s page, including sections that appear after a selection.

Decide sensitive and role-specific answers yourself

Work authorization, sponsorship, salary expectations, relocation, and demographic questions can depend on the wording and context of each application. Read the question and available options instead of assuming a previous answer fits.

For example, permission to work in one country does not answer whether you need sponsorship for a role in another. Likewise, a compensation answer needs the correct currency and pay period. Jobsy flags uncertain and sensitive answers for review; complete any remaining decisions directly on the form.

What to do when job application autofill does not work

First check that you are on the employer’s application form. A job description, a search results page, and an application form are different pages even when they describe the same role. Capturing the posting prepares the role; it does not create fillable fields.

The side panel does not find the form

Open the actual application and keep the Jobsy side panel open. For other company forms, use “Map this page” and allow access to that site. If the form still is not recognized, fill it manually and report the platform through Jobsy support. Workday support is limited, and Jobsy does not automate application boxes inside LinkedIn, Indeed, or Wellfound.

A field is marked “Needs you”

Read the full question and its options. The saved profile may not contain the answer, the question may need a decision, or Jobsy may be uncertain about the field. Complete it yourself. Do not change a truthful answer merely to clear a warning or improve a fill count.

A dropdown or a later step is still empty

Some controls reveal more questions after you choose an option. Review each application step after it appears and check the selected value on the employer’s page. Complete controls that do not fill correctly by hand, including location suggestions and dates.

The resume is missing or belongs to another role

Check the filename shown by the employer’s upload field and open the document you intend to send. If needed, download the correct tailored resume from Jobsy and attach it manually in the employer’s requested format. Having a document saved in Jobsy does not prove that the employer received it.

I want to check the workflow before using my own details

Try the sample application. Review its fictional facts, prepare the sample resume, and choose “Fill sample application”. Then inspect the form and its attachment. This demonstrates review and autofill in the browser without creating an account or sending an application to an employer.

Use this final review checklist

  • Confirm the employer, role, and location match the application you intended to prepare.
  • Check your name, email, phone number, and portfolio links.
  • Open the attached resume and cover letter to confirm they belong to this role.
  • Check dropdowns, dates, required fields, consent boxes, and any new conditional questions.
  • Read generated answers for accuracy and relevance, then submit the application yourself.

If a field does not fill correctly, edit it manually and report the problem with the application platform and extension version. You can practice the workflow first in the demo without sending anything to an employer.
